Gambrill State Park
Located just 6 miles from downtown Frederick, Maryland, Gambrill State Park is a park with well marked trails and tough terrain. Expect rocky, challenging terrain and steep climbs. The rocky terrain dries faster than most area trails meaning it is one of the first trails ready to ride after a wet spring. There’s a map kiosk at the Gambrill Park road trailhead and color topo maps can be purchased from the Maryland DNR web site.
The yellow loop, maintained by local mountain bikers will raise your heart rate and test your skills with rock-filled descents. The blue Catoctin trail will lead you into the adjacent Frederick Municipal Forest, but be warned, it is a linear trail and won’t loop you back.
The park offers camping and pavilions. Day use carries a small fee, so bring a few dollars for the self serve payment box. This trail system is not recommended for beginners.
