Funding local bike projects

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Wouldn’t it be nice if we prioritized funding bicycle friendly transportation initiatives? Less traffic, less parking issues, safer routes to downtown and healthy exercise. Sounds like a good use of funds, eh? Let’s make it happen.

City ponders way to fund Carroll Creek Park plans

Phase II of the Carroll Creek Park would improve bicycle paths and lighting on the west end of the park, and would extend the trail east toward Highland Road. More than a park, it is an amenity to attract revenue-generating businesses and retail, said Richard Griffin, director of economic development.

Obama Bicycle Policy Wins Love From Cyclists

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the government is going to give bicycling – and walking, too – the same importance as automobiles in transportation planning and the selection of projects for federal money. The former Republican congressman quietly announced the “sea change” in transportation policy last month.

“This is the end of favoring motorized transportation at the expense of non-motorized,” he wrote in his government blog.

3 Feet

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Maryland’s final day of the legislative session:

The Senate has given final blessing to a measure requiring motorists to give cyclists three feet of space when possible. It appears this legislation is ready for the governor’s signature. Tami Bensky, the widow of Lawrence Bensky — who was fatally struck by a car while riding Tuesday afternoon near Butler and Falls roads in Baltimore County — was in Annapolis to push for the passage of the legislation.

Greenbrier State Park Trailwork this Sunday!

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Just over the Frederick County line, in neighboring Washington County, Greenbrier State Park Trail Liaison Phil VanWerkhoven is seeking volunteers for his workday this Sunday, April 11, 2010 at 9:00 AM! The workday is going to focus on certain parts of the trail system in preparation for the upcoming Greenbrier Challenge UCI C2 Mountain Bike Race scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2010, as well as a summer of good fun riding! There are a few trees to cut out, and some drainage issues to address, and depending on turnout, volunteers may split into separate groups to cover the territory.

Please consider coming out to join Phil and others on Greenbrier’s great trail system. RSVP at the MORE link below, or through Phil’s email (or, just show up), so he has an idea of how many are coming, and how many tools to bring, etc. Bring, water, snacks, and gloves; tools will be provided by Mid Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE). Meet by the boat ramp; enter the park and keep going right until you get there.

Details here!
